Chapter 1: Ominous SignsShe was dreaming of ravens again. Sometimes they would sit on the branches of a dead tree as it snowed, cawing in sharp, crisp voices that faded upon waking. At other times there would be just one, on top of a human skull. It was a long time since she'd seen a raven, let alone heard its caw. Her mind took her back to her childhood of warm, motherly hands and a proud smile on her father's face. They faded away into nothingness and she was cold, lonely and scared. It made her toss and turn in her bed, but it wasn't enough to wake her up. She was having more and more trouble telling the difference between dreams and memories.
Her chest tightened and she found it hard to breathe. This, too, happened when she dreamt about ravens. Tears ran down her cheeks and when she finally managed to tear free from the dream, she woke up coldsweating and gasping for breath. Darkness greeted her, which did nothing to diminish her fears.
